Long-term report: battered, but still usable November 9, 2007

I've been using an AirClick for about a year now, and though it hasn't
survived unscathed, it's still working - just.
I bought it mainly to use in my car; it was cheaper than buying a new
car unit! I connect the iPod to my car unit using a line-in cable, attach
the receiver to the iPod, then put it in the glove compartment. The control
unit goes onto the steering wheel, and I can change tracks or pause from
there. (I still use the car's stalk-mounted control for the volume, and just
set the iPod to max.) So long as I choose my playlist and shuffle mode before
setting off, it works fine.
Attachment to the steering wheel is my first proviso: the AirClick comes with a
cradle-plus-Velcro-strap for the remote precisely for this purpose, but it is
curved for the control to go on the *outside* of the steering wheel. If I did
that, then it would get in the way every time I turned a corner! I've mounted
it so that the unit goes on the inside of the wheel, which works fine.
Second proviso: after a few months, the sprung clip hinge on the control unit
broke (as I was slotting it into the cradle, with no obvious use of force). I
managed to put it together again, but had to omit the spring (otherwise it
would just fly apart again). So it's no longer safe to clip it onto a pocket,
and it does fall of the steering wheel occasionally. A few months later, the
clip started to crack in the middle; if that goes, then it won't fit in the
cradle. At present, it's held together with sticky tape!
Third proviso: the instruction manual says that the battery in the control
"should last the lifetime of the product in normal use" (which may say
something about the expected lifetime!) I found that after 10 months (used
mainly in the car for about an hour a day), it started to become unresponsive.
A new battery seems to have done the trick.
As another review points out, the receiver won't fit on an iPod that's in a
case (at least, not a 5th generation model like mine). It needs to be flush
with the entire bottom of the iPod; cases that expose just the connector socket
can't be used. However, I bought a Proporta silicone sleeve and cut slits in it
on either side of the connector hole. By prising these apart, I can attach
the AirClick receiver without having to remove the sleeve.
All in all: I was a bit disappointed that the clip broke fairly quickly,
but I think that the unit is reasonable for its price; and by and large it
does what I want it to.

A very useful item but two drawbacks (hence the 3 stars): Firstly, it does not work with the Nano (the unit covers the headphone socket and there is no headphone socket in the unit to plug into).
The receiving unit will not fit an iPod whilst it is in a case (unless you can get a really, really thin case) so is little use on the move which is a great shame. As my iPods are kept either in my pocket or bag with other items they would soon become badly marked and the screen on the video damaged if I did not keep them in a case, so sadly this remote is for home use only. Maybe Griffin will re-design with a headphone socket and a longer connector, then I would strongly recommend the item.
And for anyone just planning to use this at home I award 5 stars of course as it is exceptional in those circumstances.

This gadget really helps when using an i-Pod, either on the move or in the home, and it's so simple to use. It really is plug in and go.
I've used mine while walking and cycling and the remote attaches easily to wrist or handlebars so your i-Pod stays safely in your pocket.
I'm also a drummer, and I use my i-Pod when analysing and playing along to new tunes. With this gadget I can rewind or return to the start much easier than using the clickwheel.
Controls include "Play/Pause", "Next/FastForward", "Previous/Rewind", and "Volume". The remote also has a hold switch to prevent accidental use.
Because the unit is controlled using radio frequency, you don't have to point the remote at the unit and this is great for use when your i-Pod is connected to a home hi-fi system.
The unit works with all i-Pods with a dock connector and if your looking for a remote, this is the one to buy. I love it.
